ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner

Product:  ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner.  This little pot of eyeliner is a beauty bargain.

Overall Rating = 4.25 Stars – Excellent

Cost: $3 for .17 oz. ($17.65 per ounce)  Price Category: Dirt Cheap

Sold By: elfcosmetics; Walgreen’s; Walmart; Retailers everywhere.

Container: Plastic jar with twist-off lid, outer carton.

Description: ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner is a water-resistant gel cream eyeliner in a little pot.  This eyeliner requires an eye makeup remover to effectively take all of it off.

Sensitivity:  ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner is a fragrance-free product suitable for those with sensitive eyes or contact lenses.  I have never experienced any sensitivity issues personally and I have never had any complaints from the hundreds of clients I have used this on.

Company Claims:  “The cream formula creates smooth lines that are defined and precise. Smudge-proof, budge-proof and water-resistant coverage for all day wear to combat against sweat, tears or rain! Achieve thin or bold lines with ease. Slanted Eyeliner Brush included.”

Discussion:  ELF, also known as e.l.f., stands for eyes-lips-face.  This is a very inexpensive brand that is sold at discount retailers and drug stores.  I’m sure a lot of you have never tried this brand because it is so cheap and you probably assume that for this price, it can’t possibly be any good.  I thought the same thing when I first saw this line, but I go through so much makeup I figured I’d give it a try.   If it ended up in the trash I didn’t spend much, so who cares, right?

I am a huge fan of gel and cream eyeliners.  They have great staying power and perform well under a variety of conditions such as hot lights and humidity.  It is also easy to achieve very dramatic looks with the deeply pigmented colors.

One reason that I use ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner is because gel and cream eyeliners do not last very long.  They dry out after a few months and need to be replaced.  If you are buying an eyeliner for $40, that quickly gets expensive if it needs to be replaced frequently.  You can replace ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner whenever you need to and it is not a big deal.  There is not much of a financial commitment here.

I also buy a lot of this eyeliner so that I can have one for each client and not have to use a sterile brush each time I dip into it, which saves me a lot of time.

Morning Review:  ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner has a very thick consistency.  The black is a deep rich black.  The brush that comes with the eyeliner is useless to me.  It is very short, the bristles are too thick, and it deposits way too much product onto the eyelid.  I prefer a much better quality brush with longer tapered bristles.  This little brush is better suited for eyebrows than eyeliner.

With a smaller more flexible brush, I find ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner is very easy to use.  I like to build up the desired color in layers.  You won’t be able to line your eyes in one swoop with this eyeliner like you can a liquid eyeliner.  You can also tightline with this if you don’t have extremely oily skin.  Since I have very dry skin, once this eyeliner sets on me, it does not go anywhere until I take it off.

Evening Review:  After several hours ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner did not smudge, fade, flake or cause any irritation issues.  I had to use an eye makeup remover designed for waterproof makeup to get all of the eyeliner off.

Overall Review:  ELF Studio Cream Eyeliner is not the world’s best eyeliner, but for the price, it cannot be beaten.  If you are new to gel eyeliners, this is a perfect one for you to practice with.

Pros:

  • Stays on well
  • Can be built up and layered
  • Very inexpensive

Cons:

  • May smudge on very oily skin
  • Is water resistant, not waterproof
  • The brush that comes with it is not useful.
  • Most of the fashion colors have been discontinued.

Helpful Tips & Tricks:

  • Keep the lid on the jar as much as possible.  While you are applying the eyeliner, turn the jar upside down onto a clean paper towel to prevent air from drying it out and to minimize contamination.
  • If you have extremely oily eyelids, always “set” your cream or gel eyeliner with an eye shadow in the same color as the eyeliner.
  • For a glossy extra-dramatic look you can apply a shiny wet-look liquid eyeliner on top of this.

Step By Step Instructions On How to Apply False Eyelashes (Fake Lashes) Like A Pro

Step By Step Instructions On How to  Apply False Eyelashes (Fake Lashes) Like A Pro — I previously reviewed my favorite brand of strip eyelashes, Kiss.  I received lots of messages from people telling me that they had never been successful in getting them on, so I decided to try and help with some easy application tips and tricks.  Also, all of the false eyelash application tutorials on other sites and YouTube provide information that is just plain wrong, and even dangerous.  I would say that I have seen more incorrect and harmful information related to false eyelashes than any other beauty product.

I love false lashes because nothing can add drama and definition to your eyes like beautiful flirty lashes. Whether you have no lashes or yours just need a little help, there is the perfect pair out there for you.  I don’t know what else can make you look so much better for under $5.00.

Some people are intimidated by the application process, but it really is quite simple once you get the hang of it.  I can actually apply false eyelashes in the same amount of time as two coats of mascara, so if you are new to the world of fake lashes, give it a few tries and in no time, they’ll be quick and easy for you.  Also, if you put them on correctly, they will stay on without any worries.  (I don’t recommend this, but I have even fallen asleep with them on and worn them for a couple of days without them coming off.)

These application tips, tricks and instructions are for removable strip upper lashes, not eyelash extensions or individual lashes.

Warnings:

  • If you have never worn false eyelashes before, please be advised that some lash adhesives contain latex. If you have a latex allergy, make sure you buy only latex-free glue.  (You can message me and I’ll recommend some good brands for you.)
  • If you are sensitive to dyes, buy the white or clear adhesive and not the black. I use the white because of my hypersensitivity.

Step By Step Instructions On How to  Apply False Eyelashes (Fake Lashes) Like A Pro:

  • Sterilize your hands before beginning the eyelash application.  Eye infections are not only ugly, but extremely dangerous.  Your eyes are precious and priceless, so take caution when applying eye makeup.
  • Begin by curling your natural lashes with an eyelash curler.  (If you heat the curler slightly with a blow dryer it will work even better but be careful and don’t get it too hot.)
  • Keep your eyelash curler clean, sterilized, and replace the rubber strip every few months.
  • Apply all of your other eye makeup first–primer, eye shadows, eyeliner, and apply mascara to your lower lashes only.
  • If you apply the false lashes before your other eye makeup, you’re likely to get eye shadow on them and then you may knock them off when trying to clean the fallout.
  • If you are a first-time user, synthetic lashes are stiffer than natural human-hair lashes and they will be easier for you to practice with, but they won’t look as natural. A cheap, thick, dramatic synthetic pair is the best thing to practice with until you get the hang of it.
  • Remove the eyelash from the tray from the outer corner moving inward.
  • Measure the eyelash to see if it is too wide for the width of your eye and needs to be trimmed.
  • If it needs to be trimmed, trim from the outer edge, not the inner edge.  (The outer edge will be closer to your temple and the inner edge will be closer to your nose.)
  • If the lashes need to be trimmed, sterilize the scissors first that you are going to use.  (I like to use a very small pair of cuticle or embroidery scissors that I keep sterilized and only use for lashes.)  If you don’t have any scissors, you can sterilize some nail clippers.
  • Bend the eyelash to match the curvature of your eye. (Move them back and forth like a Slinky to get them to bend.)  Eliminating this step is what gets most people in trouble and the lashes don’t look right or the ends pop up because they are too straight.
  • If the lashes are synthetic, feel stiff and won’t bend to match your eye shape, place them back onto the tray and gently heat them with a hair dryer on low heat for about 30 seconds.  This will make them much more flexible.
  • Apply glue with a sterile toothpick, not from the tube.
  • If you apply glue from the tube, you will get too much glue on the eyelash.
  • Use as little glue as possible.
  • Let the glue dry for about 15-30 seconds before applying. (depends upon brand and thickness)
  • Don’t blow on the lash to dry it; your breath contains bacteria.
  • It is easier if you look down in a mirror and place the false lashes on your eyelid in a downward motion rather than coming straight in to your eyelid.
  • Apply the lash from the inner corner where your lashes begin to the outer corner.
  • Don’t get the lashes too close to your tear ducts.
  • Place the false lashes on the edge of the eyelid next to your natural lashes.
  • Don’t glue the fake lashes onto your natural lashes.  Doing so may pull out some of your own natural lashes when you remove the false lashes and you want to avoid that at all costs.
  • If your eyes are downturned, you can place the outer edge of the lash just above your natural lash line to give the eyes more of an upturned look.
  • After application gently press the lash onto the skin to secure the adhesion.
  • You can sterilize the blunt end of a pair of tweezers to press the lashes to your eyelid.
  • If you don’t have any tweezers, you can use the stick of a clean cotton swab to press the false lashes to your lid.  Make sure to remove the cotton ball at the end first or you will end up with cotton fibers stuck to your lashes. (That won’t look or feel good.)
  • Blend your lashes into your own with a dry spoolie or a mascara made for false lashes. (I like Ardell Lash Magic and I wrote an in-depth review of it if you want to learn more.)
  • Preferably, don’t use regular mascara on your false eyelashes.
  • If you do use regular mascara on your false lashes, make sure it is a water-based formula.
  • If you use waterproof mascara on your false lashes they will only be good for one use.
  • Once the lashes are on and the glue has dried, you may need to touch up your eyeliner.
  • When it is time to remove them, carefully lift up the outer edge and peel them off in the direction from your temple to your nose.
  • Store them on the tray and in the package that they came in for re-use.
  • Carefully remove the old adhesive before applying new adhesive.

If you have never tried false eyelashes and don’t wear a lot of makeup, begin with a natural look and don’t get frustrated.  It takes a few tries to get the routine down.  I can now apply them start to finish in about a minute each.

Cost: $21.00 each (.20 oz.) ($105 per ounce)  Price Category: Expensive

Sold By: LancômeUSA; Dillard’s; Macy’s; Nordstrom; Major Department Stores.

Container:  Plastic container with swing-out lid, outer carton.

Description: Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow is a highly-pigmented powdered eye shadow with a nice silky finish.  You can also get palettes with several colors, but I’m only focusing on the single shadows today.  The shadows do not come with any type of applicator.  You do not need a separate eye makeup remover to take this off; it will come off with any standard facial cleanser.

Sensitivity:  Unlike most Lancôme products that are loaded with perfume, Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow is a fragrance-free product and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this eye shadow and I have never had any complaints from clients or testers.

Company Claims:  “Make a statement with these shadow singles designed by Lancôme Global makeup artists. Available in a variety of chic shades and finishes—from shimmer to sheen and metallic to matte—to complement every wardrobe. Lancôme’s Micro-aired technology promises effortless application and smooth-gliding color that’s beautifully blendable. The long-lasting, pigment-packed color stays true for daylong wear.”

“Benefits:

  • Color glides on smoothly and blends easily for a professional finish every time.
  • Color stays true and looks beautiful all day.

Technology:

  • Micro-aired powder
  • Ergonomically designed slide compact with see-through cover”

Discussion:  While not my favorite eye shadow, Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow is a close second to MAC and also has a lot of options available.

Colors:  Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow comes in 73 colors.  I decided to feature four that closely correspond to the MAC colors I previously reviewed that I typically use for smoky-eye looks.   These four colors are:

  • Drape (White) (Shimmer)
  • It List (Black) (Matte)
  • Riviera (Medium Grey) (Shimmer)
  • The New Black (Black) (Metallic)

FinishesLancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow comes in four finishes ranging from a flat dull finish to a sparkly shine:

  • Matte
  • Satin
  • Shimmer
  • Metallic

Morning Review:  I suggest using a base medium or a primer under powdered eye shadows.  When you use a primer the colors will be a little more intense just like when you wet them and will last longer without fading or flaking.  If you do not use primer, the colors will not be as vibrant or deep and the finish will be softer.

I would say that the texture of the Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow is a little silkier and smoother than MAC.  It has a lighter feel to it when applying it to the eyelid.  You can layer these shadows for greater intensity.  I would not say that this is a positive or a negative trait; it is simply a little different.

If you want your smoky eye look to be suitable for daytime or on the subtle side, begin with the lightest shades and work your way to the darkest shades.  If you are going for a full-on glamorous dramatic look, then begin with the darkest shades and blend the lighter shades in.

Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow glides on easily and does not tug or pull.  For this classic smoky look, I applied Drape on the inner corner and just under the tear duct. I put Riviera on the upper eyelid up to the crease line.  I then added The New Black onto the brow bone and under the lower lashes.  I then finished with It List at the outer corner.  You will see that this look has a slightly more shimmery effect than the MAC look.  That is because Lancôme does not make a matte white shadow.  The makeup was completed with eyeliner, mascara and false lashes.

Evening Review:  After many hours the Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadows have not faded, creased, or flaked and still look good without the need for any touch ups.

Overall Review:  Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow offers professional results and is easy to use.

Pros:

  • Performance – Lancôme Color Design Sensational Effects Smooth Hold Eye Shadow performs very well.  It has great staying power and is easy to blend.
  • Finish – If you like a more natural or sheer look, you may prefer these over MAC.

Cons:

  • Price – Each time I buy these shadows, the price goes up and the amount of product goes down, so they are getting more and more expensive.
  • Amount of Product – A few years ago this same shadow was called Color Focus and had .80 ounces. Then it went to .42 ounces and I recently only got .20 ounce in one color.  (See photos below for examples)  These are far too expensive for me to use on clients.  You will note that Lancôme no longer lists how much product is contained in these eye shadows on their website.  I even sent an email to customer service to find out if all of the eye shadow colors are now only going to have .20 ounces in them and was told they would have to research my question and get back to me!
  • Packaging – Also, rather than having a bunch of little containers, I prefer to put eye shadows in my own professional palette and I cannot do that with these.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Product:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner.  Do you like a sexy winged or cat-eye look?  Men do.  This is one eyeliner that can help you achieve that look quickly and easily.

Overall Rating = 3+ stars3.5 Stars – Very Good

Cost: $22.00 (.16 fl. oz.) ($137.50 per fluid ounce)  Price Category: Expensive

Sold By: Stila Cosmetics; Sephora; Ulta.

Container: Plastic tube with marker tip and snap-on cap, outer carton.

Description:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is a fragrance-free waterproof liquid eyeliner.  This has a pointed marker-type felt tip rather than a wand with a brush at the end.

Stila is a favorite brand among professional makeup artists like myself.  Stila is somewhat expensive but some of their products are worth the extra expense.

I mostly use this product for my personal use.  Supposedly, the felt tip can be sterilized after each use with alcohol, but I’m not sure how much I trust that so I don’t typically use marker-type eyeliners on clients.  When a commercial client is furnishing the products, this is the liquid eyeliner I request and I have a dedicated one for each client, so there are no sterilization issues.

Sensitivity:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner  is a fragrance-free product and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this eye shadow and I have never had any complaints from clients.

Company Claims:  “Our #1 selling waterproof liquid liner enables you to create a variety of eye-opening effects—from thin, precise lines to thick, dramatic looks. The formula glides on with ease, dries quickly and won’t smudge or run day-into-night.

The fine marker-like tip offers precise application for everyone from novices to pros and results in beautifully defined eyes that will leave a lasting impression.

Benefits:

  • Waterproof and easy-to-use
  • Goes on smoothly without skipping, smudging, or pulling
  • Lasts all day long!
  • Store horizontally for best performance”

Discussion:  Today is Valentine’s Day!  If you are going on a date with your sweetheart tonight you are going to want sexy, seductive eyes, right?  One of the quickest and easiest ways to accomplish that is with a cat-eye style of eyeliner.

I have used every type of eyeliner ever invented for three decades.  When I first tried the markers, I fell in love with them because they are so easy to use and they make the job of applying eyeliner quick and fun rather than a tedious task.

Colors:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner comes in 15 colors.  I have used the Intense Black on everyone from fair-skinned to dark-skinned clients.  It is a deep rich black that works for all skin tones.

Morning Review:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is in a long, slender plastic tube.  The felt tip is very pointed, slightly stiff, and allows for nice control.

The eyeliner has no fragrance and simply has a light chemical smell that completely disappears once the product dries.  I don’t experience any adverse effects from the scent.  The eyeliner itself is slightly thicker than an ink, but not as thick as a traditional liquid eyeliner.  Once dried, the eyeliner has a slight sheen to it.  I prefer a dull finish and I usually put a thin layer of eye shadow on top to change the finish from a sheen to a matte.

I applied the eyeliner once I was finished with the eye shadows.  It will take a little while for the eyeliner to dry, so be careful not to look up too soon if you have very deep set eyes, or you will get it on your upper lids and mess up your shadows.

This is the eyeliner that I used when I did the evening look with the MAC Powder Eye Shadows that I recently reviewed.

Due to the finely pointed tip you can make the line as thick or thin as you like.  You can also get creative with designs and special effects with the colors.

Evening Review:  After many hours, my eye makeup still looks perfect and nothing has faded, melted, or flaked off.  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner has excellent staying power and performs beautifully.

Overall Review:    The reason I prefer Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner over many other marker-type brands is the tip is very fine and pointed which provides a great deal of control. This tip makes it easy to fill in tiny spots between lashes, and to draw a precise point on the winged-edges of a cat-eye look.

The formula itself outperforms most other brands I have tried.  As an added bonus, Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner is water resistant.  The company claims it is waterproof, but I would say it is more water resistant than waterproof.  Water resistance is especially important for brides that cry, actors and models under hot lights, and anyone with oily eyelids where makeup has a tendency to melt off.  It won’t run if your eyes water, but note that if you do get it wet and then rub your eyes, it will come off.

Pros:  Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner has a lot of excellent qualities:

  • Professional quality performance
  • Water-resistant formula
  • Wide range of colors to choose from
  • No sensitivity issues
  • Good for all skin types

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • I would prefer a matte finish.

Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer

Product:  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer.  Is this the best eye primer to keep your makeup from fading or melting?

Overall Rating = 3+ stars3.5 Stars – Very Good

Cost: $20.00 (.39 fl. oz.) ($51.28 per ounce)  Price Category: Expensive

Sold By: Sephora; Ulta.

Container: Plastic squeeze tube with outer twist-off cap, outer carton.

Most eye primers come in glass tubes with wands like lip gloss.  I don’t buy those because once you touch the wand to skin the product is contaminated and there is a lot of wasted product that you can’t get out of the inflexible glass tube.  I prefer the packaging of this Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer.  The flexible plastic tube limits air exposure, contamination and allows you to squeeze out every last drop so there is no waste.

Description:  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer is a fragrance-free primer that is intended to be used under powdered eye shadows.

Tarte is known for their products that are primarily made from Amazonian clay.  Their tagline is “high-performance naturals”.  I first became interested in this brand because they are environmentally and animal friendly.  As an added bonus, most of their products also perform quite well, some better than others.

Sensitivity:  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer is a fragrance-free product and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this eye primer and I have never had any complaints from the numerous clients I have used this on.

Company Claims:  “This primer acts as a smudge-proof base for shadow while preventing fallout and migration of color. The universal shade glides on easily and powers through the day into the evening for 12 hours of perfect wear.”  and

“360 Degree Creaseless can be used as both a shadow primer and under eye base to smooth areas around the eye giving you a seamless application and all around 360 degree eye solutions.”

“Key Claims and Benefits:

  • Waterproof 12-hour wear
  • Dermatologist tested
  • Enriched with Vitamin E”

Discussion:  Should you bother with an eye shadow primer?  Will it really make in any difference in the way the eye makeup looks or in how long the eye makeup will stay on?  Yes, most definitely.  This is especially important for anyone with oily eyelids where makeup will melt off within an hour.  An eye shadow primer will intensify the color of the shadow, make the application appear smoother, and add longevity to the makeup look.

Eye primers are not thick like eye gel creams, or concealers.  The consistency is closer to a lotion or thick serum.  Most are tinted to match your skin, some have a pearly nacreous luster, and some are shimmery and glittery.  I prefer primers that disappear but leave a texture that acts like a two-sided piece of tape: the primer adheres to eyelids while keeping the eye makeup on top from fading or maneuvering into your eyelid crease.  A good eye primer can replace a concealer over the lid and even out skin tone and texture.

Colors:  Unlike other eye primers, Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer only comes in one color.  I have used this on fair-skinned to dark-skinned clients.  It works for all skin tones.

Morning Review:  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer is a white- colored cream that has no color once it is applied onto the eyelid.  Most eye primers are flesh-toned like Caucasian skin.  Since I apply makeup to all races, I prefer a product that is colorless.  The other benefit to a colorless product is that it will not alter the color of the eye shadows that are being applied on top of it.

The primer has no fragrance and simply has a light chemical smell that completely disappears once the product dries.  I don’t experience any adverse effects from the scent.  A drop of about 1/8 teaspoon is enough for both eyes.  This product actually works best if you do not use too much.  I always let the primer set for at least 60 seconds before applying shadows.  Usually I just apply the primer, do my brows, and then go back to the eyes to give the primer a chance to dry.  Once it dries, the skin on my eyelids actually looks a feels smoother.  It dries to a slightly powdery finish, so this is only good under powdered eye shadows.  Don’t try to use this under a cream or gel eye shadow or it will cause streaking.

This is the primer that I used under the MAC Powder Eye Shadows that I recently reviewed.  You can take a look at that review if you want to see the colors I used.

Evening Review:  Many hours later my eye makeup still looks perfect and nothing has faded, melted, flaked, or settled into the crease of my eyes.  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer definitely makes a difference in how long eye makeup will stay on without the need for touch-ups.

Overall Review:  I have tried dozens of eye primers ranging in price from $1 to $78 and this is the one I prefer to use.  This one outperforms all of the other eye primers I have tested.  I have used this on young girls with very oily skin and elderly clients with very dry skin and it has proven effective with all skin types.

Pros:  Tarte Clean Slate 360 Creaseless 12-Hour Smoothing Eye Primer has a lot of good qualities:

  • Professional quality performace
  • Works great with powdered eye shadows
  • No sensitivity issues
  • Works effectively on all skin types from very oily to very dry
  • Packaging system keeps product sanitary and allows full usage of the contents
  • Good for all skin types

Cons:

  • This is not good to use under cream eye shadows.
  • I have a difficult time finding this product in stock and have to order it online.

Cost: $6.00 by itself (.05 oz.) ($120 per ounce)  Price Category: Mid-range

Cost: $16.00 in package (.04 oz.) ($400 per ounce)  Price Category: Expensive

Sold By: MAC Cosmetics; Dillard’s; Macy’s; Nordstrom; Major Department Stores.

Container: Either a separate metal pan that you place into your own palette or a standard eye shadow in a plastic container with an attached flip-top lid and outer box.

Description:  MAC, also known as M-A-C (which stands for Make-up-Art-Cosmetics) is owned by the cosmetics giant, Estée Lauder.  This is a mid-range to high-end brand that is frequently counterfeited so be sure to purchase your MAC products from a reputable retailer.  MAC was originally developed for makeup professionals and was not intended to be a retail brand, but it is now one of the largest retail makeup brands in the world.

MAC Powder Eye Shadow is a highly-pigmented powdered eye shadow that comes in separate metal pans that you can add to your own case or you can buy the colors separately in a little plastic case.  The case will cost you an extra $10 each.  The eye shadow does not come with an applicator and you will need your own brush.  You do not need a separate eye makeup remover to take this off.

Sensitivity:  MAC Powder Eye Shadow is a fragrance-free product and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

MAC Powder Eye Shadow does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this eye shadow and I have never had any complaints from the hundreds of clients I have used this on.

Company Claims:  “Highly pigmented powder. Applies evenly, blends well. Can be used wet or dry. Available in a wide variety of textures and finishes.”

“Key Claims and Benefits:

  • Dermatologist tested
  • Ophthalmologist tested
  • Non-acnegenic
  • Safe for contact lens wearers
  • Can be used wet or dry”

Discussion:  I have been using MAC Powder Eye Shadow for most of my career, which spans decades.  Because of all of the available options with these shadows, you are only limited by your own imagination and creativity.

Colors:  MAC Powder Eye Shadow comes in every color of the rainbow.  There are too many colors to count, so I decided to simply feature four that I typically use for smoky-eye looks.  Today I am discussing four colors from the Grey + Black color spectrum.  These colors are:

  • Black Tied (Velvet)
  • Carbon (Matte)
  • Gesso (Matte)
  • Knight Divine (Veluxe Pearl)

Finishes:  Not only do MAC Powder Eye Shadows come in every conceivable color, but they also come in a variety of finishes from a dull non-reflective Matte2 to a super-shiny frost they call Lustre.  Here is the array of finishes:

  • F: Frost. An iridescent shine that adds a highlight to any color.
  • L: Lustre. Smoothly pearlized and intensely frosted with a deluxe ultrafine conditioned finish.
  • M: Matte. High-color payoff with a no-shine matte finish.
  • M2: Matte2. An intense, opaque-matte finish with exceptionally rich color payoff.
  • S: Satin. Pure color in a satin-style finish with a soft, subtle, nonfrost, light-refractive sheen.
  • VLX: Veluxe. A superfine, pigment rich and very luxe finish that is silky, smooth and matte.
  • VP: Veluxe Pearl. Vibrantly toned, velvety soft, shimmering metallic finish overlaid with high-shine pearl.
  • V: Velvet. A soft-look finish with high-color intensity and a plush, velvety look and feel. Some Velvet finish colors also contain metallic shimmers that are slightly less shiny than the Frost finish.

Morning Review:  Today I’m going to apply the MAC Powder Eye Shadows over a primer.  When you use a primer the colors will be a little more intense and will have more staying power.  If you do not use primer, the colors will not be as vibrant or deep and the finish will be a little more sheer.

To prevent contamination I never touch my fingers to my eye shadows and only use a freshly-sterilized brush or disposable foam applicator.  If you want an intense concentration of color, you can wet your brush with sterile eye drops first.  Any wet areas should be applied last.

For the daytime look, I applied Gesso on the inner corner, just under the eye and on the brow bone underneath the eyebrow as a highlighter. I put Knight Divine on the upper eyelid up to the crease line, and added a little Carbon at the outer corner and under the lower lashes.  I then finished the rest of the eye makeup using several other products (gel eyeliner, mascara, lashes, brow products, etc.)  For a slightly more dramatic evening look I added Black Tied on the upper eyelid, a little more Carbon in the crease, and a heavier cat-eye liner.

Evening Review:  After many hours the MAC Powder Eye Shadows have not faded, creased, or flaked and still look good without the need for any touch ups.

Overall Review:

Pros:  MAC Powder Eye Shadow is a staple for many professional makeup artists like myself.  We use these eye shadows because they perform well and there are so many options available.  Yes, they cost more than some brands, but they aren’t expensive if you have your own container to put them in.  A little goes a long way and they last a long time.

Cons:  It is too bad that this is one of the most counterfeited products in the marketplace.  A lot of people sell fake products, so if you bought this from an auction site or reseller and did not like it, chances are you did not get the real thing.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow

Product:  Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow.  Do you want your eye shadow to stay on for hours?

Overall Rating = 4 stars4 Stars – Excellent

Cost: $6.99 (.14 fl. oz.) ($49.93 per fluid ounce)  Price Category: Inexpensive

Sold By: Maybelline; Walgreen’s; Wal-mart; Other Retailers.

Container: Glass pot/jar, separate twist-off plastic cap.

Description:  Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow is a waterproof cream gel eye shadow that comes in a little glass pot.  The eye shadow does not come with an applicator and you will need your own brush.  You will also need a separate eye makeup remover to take this off.

Sensitivity:  Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow is a fragrance-free product and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this eye shadow and I have never had any complaints from any of my clients.

The company claims, “Leather lush meets a creamy touch. Dare to wear our longest-lasting shadow. This matte eye shadow stays for up to 24 hours.”

Discussion:  If you have been following me for any period of time you know that I am in love with gel products when they perform well and provided they don’t dry out within a month of purchase.  Gel products save time and they have great staying power, which is great for actors, models, and even brides that need to look good for many long hours.

In my line of work I have to create a lot of dramatic smoky-eyed looks.  Gel eye shadows help me accomplish that task in much less time than layers of primers and powdered shadows.  I rarely use Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow as a stand-alone eye shadow.  I prefer to use it as an eyeliner, an eye shadow base, or even an eyebrow color.

Colors:  Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow comes in a full line of matte colors as well as the shimmery ones.  There are five colors in the Leather series, three colors in the Metal series, and seven colors in the Cream series.  Today I am discussing Chocolate Suede from the Leather series.  I have also attached photos of the other colors that are currently available in the Leather series.  (They discontinued my favorite color, Matte Brown.)

Morning Review:  Today I’m using the Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow in color number 95 (Chocolate Suede).

The company recommends applying the cream gel with your finger.  I do not agree with that suggestion.  Doing so will not only contaminate the product, but you will not achieve the best results.  I suggest using a good quality brush.  The size and type of brush depends upon the look you are going for.  I’ll be presenting an in-depth discussion of brushes in a future post.

This is a thick gel.  If you have never used one before, it may take some practice to get the application smooth.  It will work the best if you focus on a small section at a time.  I applied this on the upper eyelid up to the crease line.  I also smudged it slightly under the lower lashes and I put some on the eyebrows.  You can smudge this for about 30 seconds until it sets.  You will need to work quickly because once it sets, it is pretty much on until you use a remover.  I then finished the rest of the eye makeup using several other products (gel eyeliner, mascara, lashes, highlighter, etc.)

Evening Review:  After eight hours, Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow looks the same as when I applied it without the need for any touch ups.

Because Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow is waterproof, you will need to use an eye makeup remover to get it all off.  This will not rinse off with just ordinary facial cleanser.

Overall Review:

Pros:  This is an excellent product that serves numerous purposes.  Maybelline Color Tattoo Color Studio 24 Hr Leather Eyestudio Eyeshadow can be used as a stand-alone eye shadow, a primer, a base coat, and eyeliner.  The matte colors can also be used as an eyebrow colorant.  It works as well as many other brands that cost four or five times as much.

Cons:  I wish there were more matte colors available and I wish Maybelline would stop discontinuing the basic colors.

Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils

Product:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils.  Beautifully groomed eyebrows will greatly enhance not just your eyes, but your overall makeup.

Overall Rating = 3+ stars3.5 Stars – Very Good

Cost: $25.00 (.19 fl. oz.)  ($131.58 per fluid ounce)  Price Category: Expensive

Sold By: Lancôme Paris USA

Container: Plastic tube with twist-off medium-sized tapered-brush wand, outer carton.

Description:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils is a brush-on eyebrow gel that looks like a mascara for your brows..  This water-based gel formula adds color to the brow hairs rather than the skin beneath and the gel keeps the hairs in place.  You will not need a separate eye makeup remover to take this off.

Colors:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils comes in four colors:  Naturel (clear); Chataigne (blonde); Taupe (light brown) and Brunet (dark brown).

Fragrance:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils is fragrance-free and is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers.

The company claims, “Keep brows perfectly in place with this lightweight gel that brushes on easily for natural-looking definition. The unique formula is made to work alone or over a brow pencil for a flawless, well-groomed look. Perfectly portable for on-the-go touch-ups anytime.”

Discussion:  I am a huge fan of beautifully-groomed eyebrows.  Eyebrows are all the rage in makeup trends right now.  A full well-defined brow is a necessity if you are at all fashion forward.  If you are not paying attention to your brows you are missing a golden opportunity to make your eyes look finished and beautiful.  Eyebrows are just like the frame on a beautiful painting.  A lovely work of art looks strange and unfinished if you tape it to the wall rather than placing it in a gorgeous frame.  Your eyebrows frame your eyes in the same manner.  Eyebrow styles change drastically from one decade to the next, vacillating between thin and thick, light and dark.  For the last several years and currently, thick and dark are in style, (a little too much for my taste).

Morning Review:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils can be used by itself on brows that are already the proper thickness and shape.  Since my brows are slightly on the thin side, I first shaped them and filled them in with a brow marker.  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils is more of a styling product than a shaping product.  I then brushed the gel through my eyebrows going in the opposite direction of the hair growth to coat the hairs and then in the direction of the hair growth to smooth them down.  The Brunet is a nice cool dark chocolate color.  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils makes the eyebrow hairs lay down nicely, keeps them in place, and gives my brows a very neat and finished look.  It takes about 60 seconds for the gel to dry and set.

Sensitivity:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils does not make my nose run, eyes water, turn red or burn.  I have never experienced any sensitivities from using this brow gel and I have never had any issues from the few clients I have used this on.

Please Note:  If you do not have any eyebrow hairs at all and are drawing them on, this product will not work for you.  You must have some brow hairs for this to cling to.  If you are drawing on your eyebrows, stick to markers and pencils with a powder on top.

Water Resistance:  I put some on the back of my hand and let it dry.  I then placed my hand under running water.  It did not run off of my hand, but once wet when I touched it, the Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils came right offThis brow gel is definitely not waterproof.  I would not recommend wearing this if you are going to be swimming, playing sports or doing anything athletic where you will be sweating.

Evening Review:  After more than eight hours, my eyebrows look exactly the same as when I put the Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils on them.  It did not flake off but this product will come off if you rub your eyebrows.

Overall Review:  Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils is an excellent product that performs precisely as it is supposed to do.

Suitability:  I don’t use this on performers very often as I normally prefer waterproof products for greater longevity.  If an actor is on set all day under hot lights, this will melt and is not the best product to use.  I also would not use this on models that are going to be pulling clothing on and off of their heads.  For normal everyday wear, this will perform very well.

Lancôme Paris Brow Expert Modèle Sourcils is suitable for the following users:

  • All users (provided you do not need a waterproof product)

How To Choose The Best Mascara For Your Eyelashes

How To Choose The Best Mascara For Your Eyelashes – Mascara is one of those cosmetics that is the most confusing for most wearers.  Why?  Because there are so many different kinds, types and variables.  The below photograph shows just some of the mascaras I currently own.  As a professional makeup artist, I keep many different kinds on hand for different uses with clients.

Mascara 101 Best Formula Help Guide

What makes a good mascara?

  • Ease of application
  • A formula that provides length and/or volume (depending upon your needs)
  • No clumps
  • No flakes
  • No smudging
  • No running
  • No irritation

That doesn’t seem like too much to expect, right?  Why can’t they all do that?

Before you begin shopping for mascara, you need to know exactly what type of eyelashes you have.

Eyelash Characteristics:

  • Length – Are your lashes short, medium or long?
  • Thickness – Are your lashes thin or thick?
  • Density – Do you have sparse lashes or a lot of lashes?
  • Straight or Curly – Do your lashes have natural curl to them or do they stick straight out?
  • Suppleness – Do your lashes tend to get dry, brittle or break?
  • Delicate – Do a lot of them fall out when you rub your eyes?

Examine Your Hair:

If you are having trouble answering the above questions, typically your eyelashes will mimic your hair.  If the hair on your head is curly and thick, you probably have thicker lashes.  If your hair is fine and thin, your eyelashes are probably on the thinner side, too.  Regarding the length of your eyelashes, this trait does not correspond to any particular quality of your hair.  If your hair is very dry, chances are your eyelashes are, too and you may experience dryness or brittleness in your lashes.

Additional Concerns and Questions:

  • Do you wear contacts? (Stay away from mascaras with fibers.)
  • Do you have allergies and other sensitivities?  (Read the ingredients and make sure they are fragrance free.)
  • Do your eyes tend to water a lot?
  • Do you have oily skin? (Yes, your skin type will affect what type of mascara will work best for you.)
  • Are your eyes so deep set that your eyelashes touch your upper eyelids? (If so, a smudge-free formula is very important.)

Once you have answered all of the above questions, then you can begin to determine what type of mascara will perform the best for you.

Mascaras come in the following types of formulas:

  • Water based – These mascaras will run if you cry or your eyes water. These have a light density.  They are easily removed with any normal facial cleanser and do not require a separate eye makeup remover.  They are the gentlest to your lashes.  If you have a lot of chemical sensitivities, these formulas may be the best for you.
  • Natural – These are water-based mascaras that are made from minerals, beeswax and other naturally-occurring ingredients.  This type will always be free of fragrance and other irritants.  These are the best mascaras for anyone with allergies, sensitive eyes and those who wear contacts.
  • Water resistant – These mascaras, although water based, also contain ingredients that prevent the mascara from running if your eyes tear. These have a medium density. Some of them are easily removed with regular facial cleanser and some require an eye makeup remover.  These are good for deep set eyes and are good for people with dry, brittle lashes.
  • Waterproof – These mascaras are oil based, will not run when exposed to tears or water, but many are not smudge proof. These will have a medium or thick density depending upon the formula.  These must be removed with a dedicated eye makeup remover.  These stay on the longest and the best, but because they are oil based, they may actually smudge worse on users with very oily eyelids.  Think about this… What do you use to remove waterproof makeup?  Oil-based cleansers.  If your eyelids are extremely oily, your body is producing its own remover.  Those with oily skin will have to experiment the most to find a brand that works for them.  Waterproof mascaras can also have a drying effect on the eyelashes over time so they may not be good for those with brittle lashes.

Mascaras also have different objectives:

  • Some are designed to enhance a natural look.
  • Some will volumize or add thickness to sparse or thin lashes.
  • Some will add length.
  • Some have wands that claim to curl the lashes (They don’t work very well.)
  • Some have added fibers (These are not good for contact lens wearers.)

Mascaras have different types of applicators (wands):

  • Wands with straight brushes (These make it difficult to get into the corners.)
  • Wands with tapered brushes (These work the best.)
  • Wands with curved brushes (Most of them are too big.)
  • Wands with plastic bristles (These work okay if they are small.)
  • Wands with tiny combs (These are good for separating upper lashes but don’t work very well on lower lashes.)
  • Wands that vibrate (These are a silly gimmick.)
  • Wands that rotate (These can be very dangerous.)
  • Wands with adjustable brushes (These usually break after a few uses.)
  • Wands that are tiny just for the lower lashes (Some of these are very good.)

Most of the applicator brushes that come with mascaras are too large.  The smaller the brush, the greater the level of control.  Also, many of the brands with curved wands are way too large and the curve is wrong for the average-sized eye.  Mascaras with battery-operated rotating or vibrating wands are a marketing gimmick and I’d prefer to wiggle my own wand.  Also, there have been reports of people getting their eyelashes caught in the rotating ones and pulling them out.  Ouch!

Everyone just wants long, full, dramatic eyelashes.  So which formula do you need?

  • If you have enough lashes but they are short, look for a lengthening mascara.
  • If your lashes are a good length but you don’t have enough of them, look for a volumizing mascara. A separate eyelash primer will also add to the thickness.
  • If you have so few eyelashes that you can barely find them, look for a fiber-filled mascara. Using a separate eyelash primer will also greatly enhance your lashes.
  • If you are blessed with long, thick eyelashes, a simple water-based formula or even a clear gel mascara will add definition. (If this is you, please know that the rest of the world is envious.)

Tips and Tricks for Successful Mascara Application:

  • Always begin with clean lashes.  If you apply today’s mascara on top of yesterday’s leftovers, you are starting out with an invitation to clumping and flaking.
  • Always scrape some of the mascara back into the tube before applying. When you first pull the wand out of the tube there will be too much product on the wand.
  • If you need more product on the wand, don’t pump the wand in and out as this will infuse air into the tube, which will cause the mascara to dry out faster.  Instead, twirl the wand while fully inserted to get more mascara on the wand.
  • If your mascara came with a separate outer cap, replace the cap while the wand is out of the tube and it will last longer.  (Don’t throw away those outer caps the first time you place the wand into the tube.)  Air is the enemy of a tube of mascara.
  • Begin by coating the top of your upper eyelashes first with your mascara or primer. Let the first coat work from the top down.
  • Always move the wand in a wiggling side-to-side fashion from the lash roots to the tips rather than one sweeping motion.
  • Twirling the wand while applying to the upper lashes will help to keep the lashes separated.
  • If you are using a mascara primer, make sure to wait 30-60 seconds for it to dry, then apply your mascara on top of the primer. This will keep it from looking diluted or gray as opposed to black.
  • Use a separate clean mascara wand to separate your lashes in between coats. If you try to use the applicator brush that is already coated in mascara, you’ll end up with way too much product on them which leads to very clumpy lashes.
  • Mascara needs to thoroughly dry in between coats to avoid clumping and flaking. When applying multiple coats of mascara, avoid putting several coats on one eye at a time. Instead, switch from one eye to the next before applying a second coat in order to let your lashes dry between coats.
  • Don’t apply more than 2 coats.  More than that will lead to clumping and flaking.
  • Don’t ever share your mascara or you are inviting an eye infection.
  • Don’t add water to your mascara if it is too thick. (If you add water to a waterproof mascara, it will just bead up, not blend and that tube will need to be trashed.)
  • If it gets too thick, it is time for a new tube.

I will be adding a list of the best brands for each type of formula.

How To Determine Your Skin Type

How To Determine Your Skin Type.  Today we are not discussing a product, but offering a tutorial.  I hope you find this helpful.

Here you will find how to identify what type of skin you have.  If you don’t have a magnifying mirror, I suggest you invest in one and really examine your skin. If, after you review these characteristics you still don’t know what type of skin you have, a brief visit to an esthetician or dermatologist can make that determination.  (Or, you can message me and I’ll try to help you.)

Knowing what type of skin you have is important. You can’t buy the right type of product if you don’t know your skin type. Every day I interview clients and most of them tell me they have “normal” skin when in fact, their skin is combination or some other type. Instead of normal, I prefer the term “consistent”.

Begin by washing your face with a normal facial cleansing bar and then do not apply any type of products to your face.  After one hour, read the below descriptions to determine which one best describes your skin.

Consistent (Commonly Referred to as Normal) Everyone’s skin is “normal” to them because they live in it every day. That doesn’t help to describe a type of skin. Therefore, I’ve decided to use the term “consistent” instead of normal.

  • Skin feels comfortable, rarely dry, tight or oily.
  • Skin is the same all over the face without some areas drier or oilier than others.
  • Skin has a soft, even texture without flakiness from dryness or shine from oiliness.
  • Breakouts are rare.
  • Pores are visible but not black or enlarged.
  • Makeup will stay on for several hours without the need for touch ups.

Combination (I have found this type to be the most common.)

  • Some areas (usually nose but possibly also forehead or chin) are oily and shiny.
  • Other areas (usually cheeks) feel dry, rough or tight. Dry areas may or may not have flaky spots.
  • May experience occasional breakouts, usually in isolated areas.
  • Pores may be enlarged in the oily areas and may contain black heads or white heads. Pores in the dry areas are smaller and may be visible but not black or enlarged.
  • Makeup will stay on well on the dry areas but may need to be touched up every couple of hours on the oily areas, especially the nose.

Dry (Becomes more common as we age)

  • Skin can feel tight, chapped or rough, especially after cleansing with surfactant products such as soap.
  • May experience dullness, patchiness, itchiness or flakiness.
  • Almost never breaks out.
  • Pores are small and nearly invisible. Pores rarely have black heads or white heads.
  • Makeup will stay on for many hours until it is washed away.

Oily (Very common in teenagers)

  • The skin usually feels supple and never feels tight or dry unless a drying product has been applied.
  • Skin looks oily and shiny all over, especially as the day goes on.
  • Breakouts are a regular part of life.
  • Pores tend to be very visible, especially around the nose, and there may be black heads, white heads or both.
  • Makeup tends to melt away after a couple of hours and needs frequent touch ups.

Sensitive (Can occur at any age and in conjunction with other types)

  • Skin becomes easily irritated or inflamed, especially by fragrances, allergens or climate.
  • Skin gets red, itchy, or stings when trying most new skincare products.
  • May have a diagnosis of Rosacea, eczema or dermatitis.
  • May experience breakouts from any number of irritants.
  • May burn easily and requires sunscreen with a high SPF.
  • Makeup may irritate your skin.
  • Makeup will stay on for several hours without the need for touch ups.
  • Sensitive skin can also be Consistent, Combination, Dry, or Oily! (Yes, you may have any type of skin and also experience allergies or sensitivity issues.)

Your skin can change as you age.  For women this is especially true as you experience menopause or even peri-menopause. Hormones can cause major shifts in many areas of your body, including your basic chemistry.

If after reading this you still can’t figure out your skin type, you can message me and after answering a few simple questions, I’ll be able to tell you.
